Abstract
Collaboration with the Menil Collection
“The Mark Rothko paintings are very quiet, very silent. It’s almost as if they were not there.”
Dominique de Menil, March, 1974
In conjunction with the opening of the exhibitionSilence, at the Menil Collection, the Rothko Chapel will present the following sound performances. Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello will collaborate in an improvised performance titled The Spaces Contained in Each that uses recordings of relative silence—pauses and silences on published recordings, for example, as well as field recordings made by both artists. Jacob Kirkegaard's new piece A CAPELLA will be created live inside and in collaboration with the Rothko Chapel itself. Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist based in Los Angeles, California. Stephen Vitiello is an electronic musician and sound artist based in Richmond, Virginia. Jacob Kirkegaard is an installation artist, composer, and performer based in Berlin, Germany.
