Abstract
with Singer/Songwriter Sara Hickman
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the Rothko Chapel honors its members and donors and anyone who turned 40 in 2011 with free admission to a special concert at the Chapel with singer-songwriter Sara Hickman.
Known for her one-of-a-kind live shows, native Houstonian Hickman is the Official State Musican of Texas. She got her first guitar at age seven, and at eight wrote and performed her first song on stage. After studies at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and graduation from the University of North Texas at Denton, she landed recording contracts with Windham Hill, then Elektra. Her recent recording Best of Times (2010) compiled her songs as performed by 30 Texas artists, including Willie Nelson, Marcia Ball, Shawn Colvin, Ruthie Foster, and many others. Proceeds from the recording help two non-profits that provide art, music, and theater programs to Texas schoolchildren. Increasingly, her work has turned to benefit philanthropic and community causes including the arts, homeless shelters and Amnesty International. She has become involved in music and art therapy and has also focused her talents on music for children and parents.
