Abstract

40th Anniversary Lecture: Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen

Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen will present the Rothko Chapel 40th Anniversary lecture, furthering examination and discussion of topics guest speakers have explored since the Chapel's founding 40 years ago. In his lecture, Sen will focus on the evolution of the framework of human development and the challenges ahead for creating a more equitable and sustainable world. He was the recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his pioneering, practical contributions to relieving the causes of famine among the world's poorest citizens and has been a respected authority who has persuaded major world institutions to adopt his ideas.

Sen was born in 1933 in West Bengal, India, and was educated in India and England, where he completed his Ph.D. at Cambridge in 1959. He is currently the Thomas W. Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. He has authored numerous books which have been translated into more than thirty languages, and he is the recipient of over 90 honorary degrees from universities around the world. In the United States, he has also taught at MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, and Cornell.
