Abstract
A Chamber Opera Presented by HGOco
Together the Rothko Chapel and HGOco present a performance of chamber opera Your Name Means the Sea by the Azerbaijani composer-librettist Franghiz Alizadeh. Scored for four singers and six instrumentalists, the 30-minute opera tells the story of two young artists who weave a tale about the strength of new love and beautiful art to overcome the barriers of ethnic and religious differences.
Franghiz Alizadeh's compositional style moves between the traditional music of her homeland of Azerbaijan and the at times experimental music of present day. Her style is characterized by a bold synthesis of these two worlds, where eastern modal thinking merges with western constructive elements. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, where she studied piano and composition at the Academy of Music, Franghiz Alizadeh currently makes her home in Germany. Her opera Your Name Means the Sea is being given its premiere in Houston.
