Deep Listening - The Spiritual Component
Dr. Pauline Oliveros
Monday, November 21, 2005 at 7:30 pm Series: Preserving Spiritual Values in the Face of Religious Differences: A Series of Encounters
Music is an important ingredient of the Chapel’s approach to “the arts” and “the sacred.” Dr. Pauline Oliveros will help us explore the spiritual component involved in the art of music. Through her "life work as a composer, performer and improviser," Dr. Oliveros has founded the technique of Deep Listening®. Deep Listening incorporates all environmental sounds into musical performances and "emphasizes musicianship, attention strategies, and improvisational skills." Dr. Oliveros will discuss the process involved in Deep Listening and explore the spiritual component that can come to those who faithfully listen to music or stories. She will also perform something as a demonstration of her discussion.
Dr. Oliveros has been an influential leader in the arts throughout her career, performing in the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, serving as an advisor to the National Endowment for the Arts and teaching for 14 years at the University of California at San Diego. The Pauline Oliveros Foundation works to foster creative and innovative artistic expression. For more information, please visit her website at http://www.deeplistening.org/pauline/.
