"I am not an abstract painter. I am not interested in the relationship between form and color. The only thing I care about is the expression of man's basic emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, destiny." Mark Rothko
The second season of AIDS Foundation Houston's Mukuru “Arts for AIDS” Series will begin with a performance titled “Rothko in Russia,” featuring music by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Peteris Vasks and Dmitri Shostakovich. Mark Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz in Russia (now Latvia) in 1903. Audience members will discover the rich history and design of the Rothko Chapel, as well as immerse themselves in the seductive and dramatic music of twentieth-century Russian and Latvian composers. Performing artists include Mukuru's Artistic Director, Rodney Waters, piano; Karol Bennett, soprano; Brian Shircliffe, baritone; as well as Houston Symphony musicians Sophia Silivos and Rebecca Corruccini, violins; Wayne Brooks, viola; and Kevin Dvorak, cello.
Held at The Rothko Chapel, this is a free concert, and all donations will benefit local HIV prevention programs. This event is funded in part by a grant from the City’s Initiative Program through the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County.
