Abstract
Achieving Freedom A Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration In Collaboration with The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 3:00 pm “Achieving Freedom” is a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. Presented in collaboration with The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, the program will address the African American quest for freedom through racial struggle and hard-won success in the military. The program will begin with an introduction by Captain Paul Matthews, Founder and Director of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, who will describe the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and their contributions to our nation’s development. Actor Wayne DeHart will portray the life and times of a Buffalo Soldier, emphasizing the concepts of honor, valor, and dignity. A panel presentation featuring African American military veterans including: Arthur Joseph, a WWII veteran, James Williams, a Korean Conflict veteran, and Charles Bass, a Vietnam War veteran, will follow. Panel members will relate their stories, comparing and contrasting their experiences as African Americans in the military from the 1940’s to the 1970’s. Teachers and students from the Yes College Prep schools are participating as well. Students have created projects based on the theme “Achieving Freedom” using four project categories: Creative Writing, Museum Exhibit, Visual Art, and Multi-Media, and have submitted their work to judges at the schools. Students will present their winning entries at the end of the “Achieving Freedom” program.
