Scope and Contents
Introduction: We are in our eighth and final week of contemplating one line at a time of the Lord's Prayer from Prayers of the Cosmos: Meditations on the Aramaic Words of Jesus, by Neil Douglas-Klotz. We are here to contemplate the essence of the teachings in the original prayer. When considered from the perspective of the Aramaic language, in which the teachings were first given, the prayer expands beyond the literal interpretation that most of us learned as children, if we did learn this prayer as a child. In Jesus' native language, the meaning of the prayer softens to reveal the metaphoric, poetic intent. The prayer seen in this way provides for us an opening to a mystical level. Aramaic, like Sanskrit, is a language based in sacred sounds. As we soften to receive the teachings, we also soften to enter into the sound meanings. In this final week of the series, let us savor doing the body prayers together as a group, attending to the feeling of th sounds of the Aramaic words.
