Abstract

To mark the upcoming bicentennial commemoration of the French Revolution and the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the Rothko Chapel is planning a one-day workshop on the Perceptions of Human Rights Issues by Young Americans. We hope to highlight the struggle to keep human rights issues alive and address new challenges facing us today and in the coming century.

Six teams composed of university students and professors or human rights activists will present the topics of their choice. Each student will make a presentation lasting no more than ten minutes, and each team will lead a twenty-minute discussion on its designated topic.

An audience of selected university and high school students and interested members of the community are invited to participate in the discussion.

The program will feature: * Cultural Interpretations of Human Rights, Tina Abidi, University of St. Thomas * Rights of the Homeless and Squatters, Jeff Peterson, University of Texas, Austin * Government Intrusion and Right to Privacy, Harold Dutton, Texas Southern University * Right to Religious Freedom, Mark Railey, University of Houston * Refugees, Kenneth Chyong, Rice University * Refugees, Jesse Gainer, Refugio del Rio Grande
