Scope and Contents

This weekend marks 50 years since John and Dominique de Menil unveiled the Rothko Chapel to the public as a sacred space for art, performance and contemplation.

To mark the anniversary, Rothko Chapel will stage a virtual program of events from Friday, February 26 through Sunday, February 28 2021, ranging from conversations and performances to virtual screenings. Photography: Paul Hester

Rothko Chapel recently emerged from an 18-month-long renovation, which saw the spiritual space’s skylight, lighting design and entrance reconfigured in line with Rothko’s original concept for the space. These alterations heighten the experience of 14 panels Rothko designed for the chapel, which was completed in collaboration with architects Philip Johnson, Howard Barnstone, and Eugene Aubry.

See the website for the full roster of spring events, with further events planned for the fall.
