Abstract

Gayle Ross DeGuerin, Alejandro Chaoul, Ann Friedman, Joseph Newland Each session had a different meditation leader

Dec 7. Gayle Ross DeGeurin. Gayle has been on the Rothko Chapel Board for the past seven years. She shares meditation experiences that she has gradually garnered on the way of her life. She is influenced by her teacher, Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, beloved for his wisdom about how to be joyfully present in the moment. She also incorporates Erich Schiffman's teachings of relaxation in the body. Always an experience, this time together is about discovery, a pause in the commentary of our life-filled life. Talk a bit, a little guided meditation....ring a bell, sit, ring another bell, stretch, sit. Talk a bit, silence. Discussion if needed.

Dec 9. Alejandro Chaoul, Ph.D. Alejandro Chaoul is an assistant professor and director of education at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center’s Integrative Medicine program, where he conducts research using mind-body techniques with cancer patients, holds group and individual meditation classes, and directs the education initiatives on integrative medicine. He is also an associate faculty member at The McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics at University of Texas Medical School, where he teaches medical students in the areas of spirituality, complementary and integrative medicine, and end of life care. Alejandro is also on the Board and is a meditation and Tibetan yoga teacher of the Ligmincha Texas Institute for the Tibetan Meditative and Healing Arts as well as an advisor for the Rothko Chapel. If Alejandro is unavailable, his classes will be taught by Geshe Denma, Resident Teacher at Ligmincha Texas Institute for the Tibetan Meditative and Healing Arts.

Dec 10 8am. Ann Friedman, Ph.D. A licensed psychologist who has studied meditation intensely for the last eight years, Ann was certified in Mindfulness Facilitation from UCLA. She teaches concentration and mindfulness practices throughout Houston, focusing on sitting and walking practices that utilize breath to focus the mind, helping to develop the "muscle" of attention. The intention of this type of mindfulness practice is to equip us to stay with the sensations, thoughts, feeling tones, and mental states that arise no matter how challenging.

Dec 10 6pm. Joseph Newland. Joseph is a lover of light, the epiphany of the everyday, and a supporter of spiritual aspiration. A long-time meditator with various teachers, he became a student of Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan in 1981. This series called “Exploring Inner Space” is open-ended and wide-ranging. Breath, energy, and consciousness will be our constants as we explore various techniques: sometimes about focus, sometimes aiming for ecstasy. No experience required: just come and be present.
