Oscar Romero Awards, 2020-06-26
Scope and Contents
Ahead of reopening to the public in July, the newly renovated Rothko Chapel will host its biennial Oscar Romero Award ceremony to honor courageous, grassroots human rights advocates. Only executive director David Leslie and Myokei Caine-Barrett Shonin, the resident priest of Houston's Myoken-ji Temple, will be there physically. The recipients, all focused on climate justice, will dial in for the livestreamed event: German Chirinos is fighting to save community access to water and formerly protected lands in southern Honduras. Bernadette Demientieff, a member of Fort Yujon, Alaska's wichuaa Zhee Gwich'in tribe, is working to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Puppeteer, educator and organizerJorge Diaz, a co-founder of AgitArte and the art collective Papel Machete, has been on the front lines of recent natural disasters in Puerto Rico. The award is named for the late Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador, who was assassinated by extremist political forces in 1980.
