Covering the issue of climate change for The New York Times has taken reporter Somini Sengupta all around the globe to some of the places most vulnerable to warming temperatures.

In some of those places she’s seen how climate change has exacerbated wars, how people are already losing property to sea level rise, and how warming temperatures threaten our global coffee supply, to name just a few examples.

In the audio above, she tells Houston Matters producer Michael Hagerty about some of the common threads she’s found in those places and what gives her reason to remain optimistic despite all the negative news about climate change.

Sengupta is delivering the keynote speech tonight at the Rothko Chapel’s three-day symposium that runs through Saturday called Toward a Better Future: Transforming the Climate Crisis.
