The Rothko Chapel will host a conversation on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. exploring the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Dr. King. On Monday, Jan. 21, the chapel will have audio installations of his speeches throughout the day.

Rothko Chapel will hold two events in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., on his birthday, Jan. 15, and on the holiday, Monday, Jan. 21.

In honor of the life and work of the Rev. Dr. King, the Chapel will host a conversation on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. between civil rights activist and organizer Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr. and Former Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao exploring the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Dr. King, moderated by Melanie Lawson. Recommended Video

The program features opening remarks by Mayor Sylvester Turner and Consul General of India, Dr. Anupam Ray. This program coincides with the Houston-wide Gandhi Sesquicentennial Celebration in partnership with the Mahatma Gandhi Library-Houston.

A performance by Indrajit Banerjee (sitar) and Shantilal Shah (tabla) will take place from 6:30-7pm during seating for the event. A performance by the Phillip Hall Singers will conclude the program.

On Monday, Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Rothko Chapel will have audio installations of his speeches throughout the day, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Come listen to the quiet of the Chapel resonate with Martin Luther King Jr.’s voice. This event is free and open to the public.
