Abstract

Rabbi David Rosen and Fr. James Barlow Anderson, S.T.D. Vatican II@50 Collaboration with the American Jewish Committee Suggested donation $10

Vatican II@50 is a series of programs recognizing the worldwide impact of the Second Vatican Council, convened 50 years ago in 1962 by the enormously influential Pope John XXIII. Among the great legacies of Vatican II are increased tolerance of other religious traditions, a celebration of people’s growing awareness of human dignity, and a renewed perspective on sacred music and art. The Rothko Chapel, John and Dominique de Menil’s gift to Houston, now recognized as an international spiritual landmark, would not exist without the achievement of Vatican II. Vatican II @ 50 will address these and other important questions with lectures, concerts and conversations that focus on the common vision of Vatican II, the de Menils, and the Rothko Chapel.

This program will examine the important changes in Jewish-Catholic relations following Vatican II. Rabbi David Rosen of AJC will give a lecture, followed by a response from Fr. James Barlow Anderson, S.T.D. titled A Milestone Moment: Vatican II 50 Years Later. Rabbi David Rosen is the former Chief Rabbi of Ireland and currently serves as the Director of the American Jewish Committee's Department of Interreligious Affairs. He is an International President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace; Honorary President of the International Council of Christians and Jews; on the Board of World Religious Leaders for the Elijah Interfaith Institute; and is on the Advisory Boards of the World Congress of Imams and Rabbis for Peace; and the World Economic Forum's council of religious leaders. A discussion and Q&A from the audience will follow.
