Paul Cézanne's "Montagne" is probably not the work that will catch your eye first in the show "Becoming Modern" at the Menil Collection. But understatement is part of its appeal.
During a tour, curator Michelle White pointed out how the widely influential Eugène Delacroix led other late-19th-century artists away from strict academic rules to a place where they could begin to think for themselves. The beginnings of the strong, short strokes we associate with Vincent van Gogh, for example, first show up in graphite drawings that Delacroix didn't exhibit during his lifetime.
