Area residents are invited to experience the power of laughter to uplift the spirit and heal both body and mind at the Rothko Chapel, 3900 Yupon St., Houston.

The nonprofit has scheduled a family-friendly guided meditation exploring the important role laughter can play in spiritual health. ADVERTISING

The event is slated for noon Wednesday, July 5, and will be led by certified laughter yoga teacher Stephen Findley, who will guide guests in laughter meditation. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

Together with Findley, visitors will laugh together, then share silence, being attentive to the sound and feel of laughter while learning to let go of hang-ups, inhibitions and worries. The aim is to experience the way laughter can open the mind to joy, silliness, openness and honesty.

The event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $10.

Findley serves as the primary chaplain for the Leukemia and Pediatric Services at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he works to provide spiritual care and support for patients, caregivers and staff.

"People don't often associate laughter and meditation, but Stephen is an expert in showing how they can go hand in hand," Rothko Chapel public programs and community engagement director Ashley Clemmer said.

"He was instrumental in developing the Laughter for Health program for outpatients and caregivers at M.D. Anderson and has so much to teach us about the healing power of joy."

The event is a continuation of Rothko Chapel's educational meditation series, "12 Moments: Experiencing Spiritual and Faith Traditions."

During the months of July and August, the 12 Moments Series will be tailored toward families and children.

The series is co-sponsored by Ligmincha Texas Institute, The Jung Center of Houston, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Rothko Chapel.
