Abstract

To mark the United Nation's International Day of Peace, the Rothko Chapel hosts an evening celebration with food and music in partnership with Edge of Arabia and Art Jameel. The evening is also the launch of CULTURUNNERS – an artists' journey and cultural pilgrimage connecting communities in the United States and Middle East. CULTURUNNERS examines the potential of artists’ journeys to effect significant social change as well as play an active role in shaping cultural policy. The evening begins with an inter-generational, cross-cultural discussion celebrating the importance of artists’ freedom to work across borders, featuring Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji and Saudi artist Sarah Abu Abdallah, among others. The panel discussion is followed by a film of a journey into Mecca by Saudi artist and Edge of Arabia co-founder Ahmed Mater, to be projected on the Chapel façade. A reception with live music, food, and drinks accompanies the film projection. The evening is supported by Fotofest International and the Arab American Cultural and Community Center of Houston.
