Abstract

Nicole Brossard. Throughout the years, visitors have responded to the silent power of Mark Rothko’s work, and particularly the Rothko Chapel, by composing poems. Acclaimed Canadian avant-garde poet and novelist Nicole Brossard debuts a poem inspired by her intense admiration and affection for Rothko’s work. She also reads from her latest collection of poems in English. Brossard has published more than 30 books, including Nicole Brossard: Selections (2010, translated by Jennifer Moxley) and Mauve Desert (1987, translated by Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood). The editor of the anthology The Story So Far: Les Strategies du reel (1979), Brossard co-founded the Quebec literary journals La Barre du Jour and La Nouvelle Barre du Jour. Nicole Brossard was twice awarded Canada’s Governor General prize for poetry and has received Quebec’s highest literary honor, le Prix Athanase-David, for lifetime achievement in literature, and Le Grand Prix de Poesie de la Foundation les Forges. A book signing and reception on the plaza follows the program. Video by Runaway Productions
