Abstract

Kevin Locke (Lakota name Tokaheya Inajin, meaning "The First to Arise") is a visionary Hoop Dancer, preeminent player of the indigenous Northern Plains flute, a traditional storyteller, and educator. Kevin Locke is acknowledged to be the pivotal force in the revival of the indigenous flute tradition, which teetered on the brink of extinction and was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Locke shares his gifts with Rothko Chapel members at two performances in the Chapel, with a special reception on the plaza in between.
