Celebrate the Summer Solstice at Rothko Chapel, 2018-06-07
Scope and Contents
The longest day of the year is coming soon – celebrate the Summer Solstice at Rothko Chapel with sunrise to sunset activities that will engage and inspire the entire family on Thursday, June 21, at 6:20 A.M. and 8:20 P.M. The Summer Solstice Sunrise and Sunset Observances are part of the Chapel’s Summer Series of programs for all, including tai chi, meditations, Summer Sounds featuring two energizing bands in July, and more. These programs are available as pay-what-you-can with a suggested donation of $10.00 per person. Rothko Chapel is located in the heart of Montrose at 3900 Yupon at Sul Ross Street, Houston, TX 77006.
The Summer Solstice Sunrise Observance will begin at 6:20 A.M. with Indian ragas performed by classically trained South Indian vocalist Prema Bhat. With a Master’s in Carnatic (Indian voice and theory) Bhat will share early morning ragas that are known to have a meditative quality. The performance is followed by a facilitated walk through a temporary labyrinth placed on the Chapel plaza by Jay Stailey, a founding member of the Rothko Chapel Guild and internationally renowned labyrinth creator. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on the Chapel lawn to enjoy the vocal performances. Note: no shoes will be allowed in the labyrinth. Complimentary pastries and coffee will be provided by Panera Bread.
At 8:20 P.M. the Chapel’s Summer Solstice Sunset Observance will close the longest day of the year with a performance by Kaminari Taiko of Houston. The word “taiko” means drum in Japanese, and the art of taiko carries deep significance in Japanese culture. Complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided by Saint Arnold’s Brewing Company. All-natural, organic ice pops by Popfancy will be available for purchase. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy sitting on the Chapel lawn to listen to the drummers.
