Abstract
Developing Histavut (Equanimity)
Ann Friedman, Ph.D., Jewish Meditation
Ann Friedman, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who has studied meditation intensely for the last eight years. Her primary teacher is Rabbi David Cooper, author of many books on Jewish meditation. Two years ago, Ann was asked to teach meditation at Congregation Emanu El, which she continues to do, along with teaching regularly at Congregation Beth Yeshurun and United Orthodox Synagogues. She teaches concentration practices, such as repetitions of the names of the Divine and lines from Psalms, as well as mindfulness practices. For this session, Ann guides a mindfulness meditation, focusing on the development of hishtavut (equanimity). The practice of mindfulness and teachings of equanimity are not unique to Judaism; they are taught in many of the world's religions. The series is co-sponsored by Ligmincha Texas Institute, The Jung Center of Houston, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the Rothko Chapel.
