Abstract

with Kenneth Gayle, Tenor; Rodney Waters, Piano; Sheldon Nunn, Lecturer, Presented with Divas World Productions

Although numerous elements of spirituals can be traced to African sources, African-American spirituals are a musical form that is indigenous and specific to the religious experience of Africans in the United States and their descendants. They are a result of the interaction of music and religion from Africa with music and religion of European origin. This Song Salon will trace the lineage from the very specific African-American experience of the traditional spiritual to the more universal world of modern gospel.
