Women around the world face unique challenges to the full enjoyment of their fundamental rights. Whether they are activists in Cairo, teachers in Afghanistan, teenagers forcibly trafficked into prostitution, or refugees fleeing sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, women are both uniquely vulnerable—and uniquely powerful—in the struggle for human rights. Elisa Massimino leads a conversation focused on why Human Rights First is launching a special initiative on women’s rights to leverage American global leadership. Elisa Massimino is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Human Rights First, one of the nation’s leading human rights advocacy organizations. As a national authority on human rights law and policy, she has testified before Congress dozens of times and writes frequently for mainstream publications and specialized journals, including New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. She has also been featured on ABC News, NBC Dateline, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, MSNBC, CNN, National Public Radio, BBC and many other news outlets. Massimino serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where she teaches human rights advocacy. A reception on the plaza follows the program.
