Biography

Christopher Rothko is the second of Mark and Mary Alice Rothko’s two children. He attended Yale University, where he received a B.A. in Literature. He holds a Doctorate in Psychology from The University of Michigan and has worked as a clinical psychologist in both private and clinic settings. He has also written extensively for national publications (High Fidelity and Musical America) as a classical music critic. Currently Dr. Rothko works to organize and present exhibitions of his father’s work, around the globe. He has written and edited numerous pieces on his father’s artwork and has been published in Architectural Digest in addition to numerous museum catalogues. He has helped prepare more than a dozen Rothko exhibitions, including the acclaimed 2009 exhibition at the Tate Modern, London and the 2007 retrospective at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, which he co-curated with Director, Mordechai Omer. Dr. Rothko is the editor of his father’s book of philosophical writings, The Artist’s Reality, published by Yale University Press. Dr. Rothko has lectured extensively on his father’s work at museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Getty Museum, Los Angeles; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg; The Fondation Beyeler, Basel and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. He lives in New York City with his wife and three children. When work and children allow, he likes to sing choral music and abuse keyboard instruments
